Use Android as Microphone

Have you ever needed a microphone, but did not have one available? Have you ever searched for a way to make a cheap wireless microphone? Needless to say, you can use your Android device as a microphone. There are two ways that this can be accomplished. The first is through traditional cables, and the second is through additional software. If you want to use your Android device as a microphone through USB, Wifi or Bluetooth, then skip to the second method.

Option 1: The Simple Way

This option is for those of you who do not like installing additional software. For this option, you will need to have a 3.5mm audio cable.

Plug one end into the 3.5mm port on your phone and the other into the audio jack on your computer. In the Windows audio settings, select your Android phone as the current input device.

Then download the Microphone app from the PayStore. This app will redirect audio from your microphone to your 3.5 mm output so that you can get sound on your PC. You can either adjust the gain from within the app or within Windows.

Tap the microphone icon to start recording (not actually recording, just redirecting the sound to your computer). The sound quality is average. Even with the gain turned down low, there was a lot of distortion. I had to speak very softly and far away from the phone to get clean sound.

Option 2: WO Mic

If you are looking for a way to use your Android device as a microphone through USB, Wifi or Bluetooth, then this is what you want. Download WO Mic for your Desktop and Android device. Don’t forget to also install the device driver and reboot your computer once it’s done.

On your Android device, choose the protocol that you would like to use for WO Mic. I am going to choose USB. Then go back to the main screen and tap the start button to start the service.

On your desktop, connect to the WO Mic client using the matching protocol (USB in my case).

That’s all the setup you need. Windows will detect it as if it’s a regular microphone. Oddly enough, I found that stream over WiFi produced the best sound quality.
